Grapes of Wrath

             During the decade that Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath, took place, a vicious spiral of degeneration led people to turn on their own brethren, resort to violence, and blah blah blah. Pshaw! I would have loved to have lived during the 1930's simply because benevolence never went unnoticed or unappreciated, taking care of loved ones became the top priority, and the meaning of life was conceivable in one's lifetime.
             Throughout the time in history, acts of kindness never went unnoticed. The simplest gestures were thought to be the most beautiful things. When Grandpa Joad was at his worst state, Sairy Wilson extended her hand and offered what she had to offer. Sairy asked Ma Joad, "How'd you like ta come in our tent... You kin lay down on our mattress an' rest" (184). In the midst of such glum times, a deed so little made such a dramatic difference in the Joads' situation. This act was like a breath of fresh air compared to the circumstances. Just the same, the genuine friendliness found in Mr. Rawley's, the Weedpatch camp manager 's, demeanor made Ma Joad feel as if she were a human being again. In a sincere tone, Rawley told Ma that he had "Just dropped by to see if everything's all right." He then went on to ask, "Got everything you need?" (415). After Mr. Rawley had left, "Ma put down her head and she fought with the desire to cry" (417). The humanity she found in Mr. Rawley's voice brought her to tears. His gentle, kindhearted way that he had about him touched Ma in such a way that she began to cry. Against such a dingy backdrop, small actions like the ones mentioned here created a great contrast. For it to be so easy to recognize acts of kindness and appreciate them to such a great extent, I think, would be a beautiful thing.
             During such a time, caring for loved ones became the top priority. Mothers and fathers did what they found ...
