Much Ado About Nothing

             In the play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, he writes about the four values; wit, virtue, honor, and love. Wit means to have cleverness and intelligence. Virtue and honor mean to have morality and to be without sin. Love is the universal theme. All four Shakespearean values fit in with the characters and the plot of Much Ado About Nothing.
             One of the most important examples of wit is the constant bickering between Beatrice and Benedick. Beatrice at one point loved Benedick, but he did not requite her love. From then on, all the two did were argue about the slightest things. A conversation was taking place between Beatrice, Benedick, Leonato (Governor of Messina), and Don Pedro (Prince of Arragon). Beatrice replies to one of Benedick's insults by saying, "Is it possible disdain should die while she hath such meet food feed it as Signior Benedick" (Act I Scene I Line 116-117). Leonato, Don Pedro, and Claudio (young lord of Florence) make up a lie about Beatrice being in love with Benedick so he would fall in love her and they would get married. Benedick was unseen, but could hear everything they were saying. The same was done to Beatrice. Hero (daughter of Leonato) and Ursula (Hero's gentlewoman) say how Benedick loves Beatrice, loud enough so she could hear them. After all was said and done, Beatrice and Benedick come to love each other. Another example of wit is when Benedick says to Beatrice conceitedly, "Come, I will have thee; but by this light, I take thee for pity" (Act V Scene IV Line 92). Beatrice replies in the same tone, "I would not deny you; but, by this good day, I yield upon great persuasion; and partly to save your life, for I was told you were in a consumption" (Act V Scene IV Line 94).
