silent masculinity begins to present itself.
             As you continue into the second short story as titled, "The Doctor and the Doctor's wife," the theme of masculinity contributes the whole story. There is a male-to-male relationship of masculinity as well as a male-to-female relationship. Nick's father and Dick get in to a dispute about logs. Dick tells Nick's father that he has stolen a lot of nice wood (Hemingway 24). Nick's father immediately takes offense to Dick's remark. He then storms off and the rest of the men leave. Their interaction reveals the importance of pride between men. Although what Nick's father knows what he is doing, he does not and cannot easily give into Dick's tormenting. Dick and the other men realize this and understand.
             However, in the male-female relationship it is quite different. The masculinity is no longer on the same level as with Dick. Nick's father does not want to answer his wife's questions about what is wrong or discuss the fight with Dick. Therefore, when he does answer, he does it with lies.
