John Paul Jones was born on July 6, 1747 right near Kirkcudbright Scotland. He was the first American naval hero. When he said his famous words, "I have not yet begun to fight"; they became famous throughout the world. When John was only 12, he signed to learn an apprenticeship of a trade on a ship called the Friendship. When John finished his apprenticeship he joined the British Army. John became an actor in the West Indies. He was the first lieutenant of a ship called the Alfred. He became captain of the sloop Ranger in 1777. In France he was given command of the converted merchant the Bonhomme Richard. He was in very poor health and retired in Paris. John Paul Jones died in Paris on July b 1792.
