Is a conflict necessary in a marriage? How different is too different? Many people today ask themselves these questions when falling in love. The Man in a Case, a short play by Wendy Wasserstein, portraits the pre marriage conflict between Byelinkov and Varinka, a couple who felt deeply in love and confronted many differences and difficulties. However, they were to prove that differences are never too different.
Byelinkov, a Latin and Greek professor of a university in near Moscow, is a perfect example of those who find themselves in such situation. A very organized and traditional man, he is to try to sustain such level of conservative actions, until he finds himself in love. Love with one of the most improbable person.
Varinka, on the other hand, is the ultimate opposite side of Byelinkov. She is "pretty girl of thirty" (Wasserstein, 20.) She is a young woman who had never felt in love before and was forgotten by many of other girls of her age whom were already having children at this age. However, she is not to let anything ruin their relationship.
One of the biggest evidence that shows they will get married happens when Byelinkov says "Being married requires a great deal of responsibility" (17), affirming later "I hope I am able to provide you with all that a married man must properly provide a wife". This passage is the key; it shows not only how interested Byelinkov is with the marriage, but how important he feels abut it.
Varinka is also in love. She is trying hard to keep the marriage from breaking apart, without even realizing that this intensity is driving her future bride crazy. When she says: "Dance with me!"(18), she orders Byelinkov to dance, but he says: "You are a demanding woman" proving that even though he likes her, he does not want any major change in his life.
