There are essentially 3 types of legal postures for an adoption: (1) a blood relative adoption, (2) a "stranger adoption" where the parental rights of the biological parents have been terminated and (3) a second-parent adoption (usually in a step-parent situation), where the partner or spouse of a biological parent adopts without terminating the parental rights of the other biological parent.
