Mr. Bones had simple pleasures, like curling up at his master's feet when he was writing, or having his tummy rubbed by the neighbor, but what about his feelings and thoughts? Is a dog's mind really so simple as it is thought to be? We as humans always wonder what a dog is thinking, or feeling and if they even feel at all. It's difficult to actually know if they do have traits like us, or the capacity to actually have thoughts. This novel makes you believe that animals actually do have feelings.
             Mr. Bones is the most complete portrait of a dog. A dog's life is based on the search for someone to follow, and he is in need of a new master, someone to take care of him, the search for a mate, food, and freedom.
             Mr. Bones can foresee events, he's clever and sensitive, and he's proud and brave. He loses his master suddenly but he knows what to do. Willy told him everything on what to do and what to avoid, in the hope that his old dog would understand. His master's voice meant everything to Mr. Bones. He knows his suggestions were precious and they can help him to survive properly. But when Mr. Bones faces Willy's death he feels just like any other being would: his heart is filled with grief and sorrow and the earth a completely different place for him. Mr. Bones says something before Willy's death, "Habits die hard, and no doubt here's some truth to the adage about old dogs and new tricks, but it was more than just love or devotion that caused Mr. Bones to dread what was coming. It was pure ontological terror. Subtract Willy from the world, and the odds were that the world itself would cease to exist." And to Mr. Bones, the world might've just ended right then and there.
