Brown sat and would not continue with this "errand" any longer. The old man offered Brown his walking stick and vanished out of sight. As Goodman Brown is sitting he is thinking how he want to go back to the arms of Faith, "back where he was safe".
             Young Goodman Brown hears voices, he notices that one of the voices was the Deacon's. He was talking about some type of communion. Brown was eager to see what he was talking about because the Deacon was in the woods "where no church has ever gathered"(109).
             What Brown was to see next, changed his life forever, he instantly became knowledgeable. What he heard was a voice he believed to be Faith's, but when he called her name he only got his voice echoed back at him through the forest. At this time Brown sees a pink ribbon, Brown grabs it and says, "my Faith is gone! There is no good on earth and sin is but a name. Come, devil; for to thee is the world given (109)". Tritt explain: "The puritans only wore plain colors like black and white and for Brown to see a color of pink, it just was like a devilish thing. Brown foreshadowed the future in his mind (112)."
             Brown comes upon the ceremony, which is set up like a Puritan temple. The altar was a rock in the middle of the congregation and there were four trees surrounding the congregation with their tops on fire. Brown starts to take notice of the faces that he sees in the service, he recognizes all but doesn't see Faith and "hope came to his heart". In Capp's statement:
             "This is the first time that the word "hope" ever comes into this story and it is because this is the true turning point for Goodman Brown. If Faith was not there, as he had hoped, he would not have to live alone in his community of heathens, which he does not realize that he is apart of (25)." But as the sermon goes
