It's questionable whether or not Antigone made the right decision by disobeying Creon to
bury her brother. I think in part that she made the right decision primarily because those in command
aren't always right, lives were at stake, and finally the laws made by the Gods are more important than
My first reason supporting Antigone's decision is those in command aren't always right. A King
is a ruler of a society of people that has juristrictions to it's geography. Sure a king might be viewed more
worthy than a commoner, but one important idea to keep in mind is that all people are created equal. The
laws made by a king are most often those which are best for the people under command. But to make a
law not to bury a certain individual, especially one's own brother. Antigone felt she had to bury her
brother as she said, "Creon buried our brother Eteocles with military honors, gave him a funeral, and it
was right that he should; but Polyneices, who fought as bravely and died as miserably- They say that
Creon has sworn no one shall bury him, no one mourn for him." Antigone was forbidden to bury
Polyneices, but what could she do, one of the holiest law required the performance of certain burial rites.
So she disobeyed Creon's law and buried her brother anyway.
Secondly, lives were at stake for Antigone. If not her brothers life then hers, the burial rites
guaranteed to each individual were very important. For a person to make their way to the underworld
they must have a proper burial. Nevertheless if one has gone without a burial they would be left to wander
the earth . Antigone felt that the afterlife was more important than their life lived on earth, because a life
on earth is limited but their afterlife was for all eternity. She couldn't let her brother wander the earth for
