             When Derek was released, he returned home a changed man. However, he found that Danny wanted to become a member in the DOC. Derek continuously preached to Danny that it was wrong to become involved with that organization. Danny could not believe that his brother was the same person he knew before he went to prison. Danny refused to buy into Derek's abandonment of the DOC until Derek told Cameron that he was out for good. After that, Derek sat down with Danny and told him about his time in prison. What he said to Danny finally sunk in. Both never associated with the DOC ever again.
             In the end, though, a fellow black classmate shot Danny numerous times at short range in the men's bathroom at school. When Derek hears of this, he rushed into the bathroom and held his brother in his arms. His reaction revealed that he was angry with himself for creating this entire mess with his racist views in the beginning. By not showing anger toward the black student, it can be said that Derek has completed his transformation.
