The ways we lie

Lying is a natural part of our life everybody lies more or less. People lie to hide something or to give a false impression. Everyone lies while knowing that morally and ethically it's a wrong thing to do. Even I lie everyone does, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing to do. Its wrong, and I agree with the author it's a wrong thing to do and something has to be done about it.
People often lie thinking that the one measly simple little lie is not going to harm anybody instead it will be somewhat beneficial. In one part Stephonie Ericsson gives an example while describing white lie. She tells that its like when "a sergeant in Vietnam who knew one of his men was killed in action, but listed him as missing." He lied and now victim's family will key their hopes were alive for along time thinking that one day he will come home. Yes he lied but only so that victim's family would receive indefinite compensation instead of lump-sum. His action was wrong but he did it so at least this will continue to help victim's family financially. If I was that sergeant I would do the same thing. Because the sergeant or I don't even know what the victim's family really wanted. We made the decision without even knowing what victim's family wanted to hear. So regardless if one's action is in benefit of somebody or not, we should try to avoid lie as much as we can.
Moving on to ignoring the plain facts, in there author completely spells out how destructive lies can be. When the church in Massachusetts heard complaints about father Porter, they shouldn't have ignored them. The ecclesiastical authorities should have taken complaints a bit seriously.
