             Before the American Revolution, numerous events changed the way America is today. Two of these major events were pluralism and salutary neglect. In the early 1700s, America was a society in which many
             particular, racial or cultural groups, co-existed in one nation, also known as pluralism. Immigrants such as French Protestants who settled in cities along the coast, Jews from Portuguese colonies who set up synagogues in the major port cities, Catholics who made homes in Maryland, Lutherans from Germany and
             Sweden, Calvinists from Switzerland, and Quakers from England came to America to escape religious persecution.
             In order for colonial governments to seek greater independence, England sometimes forced the rules it set for its colonies, a policy known as Salutary Neglect. Salutary Neglect was the policy of weakly enforcing laws that England used in ruling the American Colonies in much of the late 1600s and early
             1700's. For example, in 1733, England set a tax on Molasses that the colonies imported from outside the British Empire. The colonists bribed customs officials to ignore the tax, and the English government did nothing. The Quartering Act and the Boston Massacre helped contribute to the American Revolutionary war.
             The Quartering A. ct was an affair to feed and shelter troops who
             guarded the frontier. This act requested that colonial cities give lodging to the
             royal troops. The law also ordered local government to pay for such supplies as
             firewood, bedding, candles, and salt. In 1765 The Parliament passed the Quartering
             Act. The New York assembly prohibited to vote any money for the British
             Military Commanders troops, saying that the Quartering Act organized an unfair
             burden on the colony. But when Parliament threatened to take away the powers of
             the assembly, it finally gave up the money.
