             In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker the quilts are the backbone of the family's heritage. It represents the story of their past. The bits and pieces vary from the scraps of dresses Grandma Dee Wore fifty years ago to the faded blue tiny piece of Great Grandpa Ezra's uniform he wore in the Civil War. The quilts also represent the memories of how Maggie's' grandmother taught her to quilt. When Dee came back to visit, she looked as if she was not part of the household. She came back a follower of the Muslim religion. An entirely different religion and heritage from the simple beliefs and views she was brought up on. Dee came back to collect pictures and items to showcase them in the new apartment she just rented. She has always shunned away From her family, and all that represents her heritage. From the time of the fire and Dee was glad to see the dingy old house burn down. The differences between Maggie and Dee are significant in part of the reason their mother would not let the !
             quilts go. Her family always embarrassed Dee. It was in her to be different. She was unique very outspoken and was very eccentric. When she graduated high school, she decided to go to college to make something of her. No one person told her to do this. Her mother helped her in the way that she helped raise money for college tuition through church. I feel the mother would of done the same for Maggie if she also wanted to attend a university after high school. The fact that Dee went away to school is not the issue for her mother not to give up the quilts to her. Dee was supposed to get one of the quilts, as she was promised one when she went away to college. The mother was anxious to see her daughter as she daydreamed about her at "The Johnny Carson Show" being interviewed about how successful her daughter was.
