4-H

Being in extracurricular activities have really helped me to develop socially. One
of the activities that is very special to me is 4-H. 4-H is an organization that is centered
around community service and in developing good characteristics.
When I was younger, I was extremely shy. I was very quiet, and I did not have
many friends. Most of the time, I was by myself reading books like Huckleberry Finn or
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Books became my friends, and I rarely socialized with
My mother was very concern about my socialization skills, so she enrolled me in
the 4-H Club. I didn't really want to be in it, but my mother knew best. At first, I was
very nervous about going to my first meeting. To my surprise, I enjoyed the 4-H meeting.
As time went along, I began to make friends, and I enjoyed working with people.
Being in the 4-H Club has encouraged me in public speaking. Many of the 4-H
activities were demonstrations which involved speaking before a large audience. One
year, I won first place for doing a demonstration on Nutrition. 4-H also exposed me to a
lot of activities that involved community service. I participated in such activities as
Adopt-A-Highway, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots, and Visiting the Nursing Homes.
This organization has really helped me to work with people and to overcome my
shyness. I feel more confident, and most importantly, I have acquired the social skills that
I need in order to become a productive citizen and leader.
