Romance in the Air

Written in the 1850's, "The Scarlet Letter" indeed protrays the events during the 1650's, the time of Puritanism. It documents the lives of three tragic characters, each of whom suffer greatly because of his or her sins. In these years, people expresses themselves as being pure, sinless, so when Hester commits the Adultery sin, people in the town starts to gossip on who the father must be. Many characters in the novel defines the true abstract of the novel, which exemplifies themselves as strange people. These people, Arthur Dimmesdale, Hester Prynne and Roger Chillingworth each limits themselves to a single allegorical theme. Dimmesdale continously tortures himself with guilt, a guilt that agonizes himself till the end of the book. Hester, who exemplifies dignity, stays true to this trait by helping others in need. And finally, Chillingworth, to find out the father of Pearl, seeks revenge on whom did it and what to do when he finds out. The true theme of "The Scarlet!
Letter" comprehends itself as a romance. However, Hawthorne's romance should not be based only on the definition on the word. Writing many different events and mysteries contributes romance in a sense of morbid and a plunge of oneself into a pit in order to ascend to a higher potential.
