At the age of 15 a person can be tried as an adult in a criminal suit. At the age of 18 they can buy tobacco products, lottery tickets or even go into an adult entertainment store. Finally, at the age of 21 they can purchase alcohol. Why is it that the U.S. is only only country in the world with this high of a drinking age? We are also one of the only countries with drinking problems, while Germany, Switzerland and Canada have low numbers of alcoholism. What age defines an adult? What is an adult?
Teenagers here in South Dakota have been known to take a trip up north to Canada for a weekend get away for fishing, clubbing and most importantly drinking because up in Canada it's only 18 to drink. In fact, in Canada you can order a glass of wine with a meal at the age of 16, and buy just for your personal use at 18.
Young teens taking a trip overseas to go to Germany for their German class? Well in Germany the legal drinking age over there for beer is 16 years old. Hard liquor they have to wait alittle longer because it will take until age 18 to purchase.
Wanna make a run across the border like I did at the age of 19? Mexico is a blast for spring breakers and the country thrives on Americans going down there to have a good time while college is out for a few weeks. Teenagers can go down there and do pretty much anything they want to do, but in the U.S. you could be sitting along time in jail if you got caught doing the things I did down there.
