A War Within A War

             What is meant by the title of the book? Focus on the symbolic meaning.
             John Knowles's A Separate Peace tells a story of growing up fueled by the impulsing emotions of adolescents that burst from the seams of friendship, envy, violence, and hatred. All these emotions are explored as Finny and Gene train for their illusionary 1944 Olympics. Finny remains steadfastly in denial of WWII. In his euphoric state of mind Finny claims that there is no real war, as it is a massive hoax. In the way that Finny's way of life and world-view is absorbed, and as the book's jargon subsides the title becomes as symbolic as the book's ending.
             "The fat old men who don't want us crowding them at their jobs. They've made it all up. There isn't any really food shortages, for instance. The men have all the best steaks delivered to their clubs now. You've noticed how they've been getting fatter lately, haven't you?" Finny (page 107)
             Finny's denial of the War protects him from having to accept his inability to partake in it due to his injury. Finny's refusal to believe that Gene had anything to do with his accident even after Gene attempted to confess allows him to deal with his injury without having to be conscious of his friend's betrayal, which would be more disturbing to Finny than his physical pain. Finny relies on Gene's support in dealing with his injury, so the idea of having to question his friendship is particularly grim to Finny.
             As Finny was always captured the attention of student's and staff it is logical that Gene be somewhat jealuos of his friend. Finny was idolized of his flamboyant ways, extravagant plans and acts of devious archaism. From Finny's shadows Gene lived a world of his friend being loved and admired more then he. Wanting the public status of his buddy, is it not comprehensible that Gene would go to the extremes of eliminating his friend? Making peace w...
