Misunderstandings and communication problems are obstacles that most people come across at one point in their lives while working with colleagues. While these conflicts and misunderstandings are sometimes inevitable, there is no need for it to cause unbearable stress (Stoppler, 2004). When these misunderstandings do occur, it is extremely important for the parties involved to communicate effectively so that they can resolve their conflict in a mature and professional manner.
When trying to resolve a conflict, it is important to choose the issue to be addressed and be very specific. One should always view the situation as an "us versus the problem" scenario instead of "me versus you" (Stoppler, 2004). Be honest and deal with the real issues behind the conflict.
It is not always appropriate to involve your superiors in these situations (Stoppler, 2004). It is possible to resolve small problems or difficulties personally with the parties involved. This sometimes is in the best interest of the people involved.
In every situation encountered, it is important that it be resolved in a mature and professional manner. Managing conflicts not only encourages open communication and cooperative problem solving but it also strengthens relationships and builds character. Everyone should view these conflicts as a learning experience. This is an opportunity to learn how to deal with misunderstandings with your colleagues. This also presents a learning opportunity for others; others should be able to learn from our mistakes.
