"It has been said that, in science, method is all. New fact!
s and theories grow from methods which allow new observations to be made." (Gray, Ivan Pavlov 20) This proved true in Pavlov's case. His successful methods in the digestive system later would become successful in his study of conditioned reflexes.
As Gray notes "To reach the conditioned reflex we need to move one step away from the mouth and use stimuli that act upon the animal from a distance. This step, as Pavlov was well aware, crosses the divide between physiology and psychology." (Gray, Ivan Pavlov 26) Pavlov accidentally discovered conditioned reflexes during his work on the digestive system. Pavlov spent the rest of his life studying conditioned reflexes and organized his findings into a theory of learning. His findings represents much of what we know today about associative learning. His findings would form into the theory that we call classical conditioning. As Myers states "classical conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning is defined as a type of learning in which an organism comes to associate stimuli." (Myers, Psychology 246)
Pavlov experimented almost always with the salivary reflex. The dog used in this experiment underwent a minor operation so the salivary flow is directed to a measuring device coming out of the mouth. In Pavlov's experiments he showed the
