Father Paneloux gives two sermons throughout the novel The Plague. Many people lose their faith due to their struggles with the terrible plague. Paneloux speaks about the plague and why it is happening. Father Paneloux's faith is tested just like the citizens of Oran throughout the novel.
             In Paneloux's first sermon He feels that the plague was sent from God because the people in Oran had not repented for their sins. "Calamity has come on you, my brethren, and, you my brethren, you deserved it" (94). Father Paneloux is saying this because he feels that the plague has come as a result of the people's sins. He feels that they deserved everything they got. Father Paneloux believes that Lucifer has his spear in his hand pointing it at people's houses sending the plague into their house where the plague will be awaiting their return home. Father Paneloux believes that the people of Oran are being punished because they didn't spend enough time with God at church. He believes that they are being punished just like Cain from the Old Testament. He believes that the plague, which is killing many also, is trying to lead the people towards the right path.
             In Father Paneloux's second sermon he says, "My brothers, a time of testing has come for us all we must believe everything or deny everything. And who among you, I ask, would dare to deny everything"(224). He believes that the plague is a test of faith. He wants the people to still believe in God. Through all that he has been through Paneloux has not lost his faith. "Since it was God's will, we, too, should will it"(225). Paneloux believes that if the plague is God's will then it should also be the will of the people of Oran.
