Drugs in Olympics: Pros and Cons

             Athletes around the world compete in events ranging from high school level to world class events. More athletes find drugs and steroids as a way to improve their performance rather than doing the work and training. Drug testing in Olympics strips medal winners every year. The amount of steroids and drugs on the ban list is growing, and Olympic drug testing should be stricter.
             It is true that all athletes are human. Most times the normal thing to do when a person has a cold is to take a couple pill that put the person to sleep, and when the person wakes up, he or she feels better. But, Olympic athletes don't have it that easy. Most over the counter pills have banned substances in them. A recent example is the Romanian all- around gold medalist. The day after she won, Olympic officials stripped her of her gold medal because tests showed that she had a trace amount of a banned substance.(Shadow) Although her case seems unfair, the testing can stop repeat abusers of drugs. People try all they can to be the best, but some go too far. People who abuse drugs should receive more severe penalties. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) appoints a Medical Commission with the responsibility for the application of the IOC Medical Code.              Another case that was in the news was about Marion Jones's's husband, and how he was positive for drugs. Even though he wasn't competing in the Olympics, a big deal was made about it. He had consumed a banned substance when he took an iron deficiency food supplement.
