While reading the poems "Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night" and "The Force that through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower", I noticed some similarities and many differences. I will attempt to bring some of these under higher scrutiny, and try to explain them as best I can.
             The first subject I would like to look at is theme. In "Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night", I believe that the theme can be described by the cliched phrase "You can't escape death." The poem basically describes how different types of men react to death and the knowledge of their own coming death. No matter what they do or how they react, though, none manage to escape it.
             In "The Force that through the Green Fuse Drive the Flower", I believe the theme to be Time. I capitalize the word because in the poem, it is "The Force". It is the main "character", the subject of the entire poem. I came to believe that the theme is Time mainly through line 6:
             "The force that drives the water through the rocks."
             Scientifically, through time all things are destroyed. The line above seems to suggest erosion taking place, which implies a long amount of time.
             The next subjects I would like to focus on are fairly obvious ones, meter and rhyme scheme. "Do Not Go Gentle . . ." is written in iambic pentameter with a rhyme scheme of "aba". That is not all, though. The poem also uses a type of chain rhyme. Not only do the first and third lines of every stanza rhyme with each other, but the first and third lines of each stanza also rhyme with the first and third lines of every other stanza. It seems that the author, Dylan Thomas, took great pain to arrange the poem this way.
             "The Force . . ." excluding the third line of every stanza, is also written in iambic pentameter. The break in meter shows that the poem is not totally classicist. ...
