The Discrepancies in the Values of SWTSU

             The idea of developing a proclamation of a school's key values is realistic and innovative for any university. It is the responsibility of any higher-level educational institute to promote values, to teach students to reason ethically and to cultivate the character of students, because the universities were founded as a method of preparing students for success in the real world. Although SWT included the essential ingredients for a satisfying and healthy education for all types of students in their core value statement, the school failed to put much thought into the transcription of these ideas. The main problem with the SWT core values document is the actual wording and implications of the text.
             The core value statement begins by declaring:
             We the faculty, staff and students at SWT, affirm that our
             university exists to enrich our minds and to humanize our
             hearts so that we might contribute to the betterment of
             This assertion includes a very large group of people, over 20,000, and it can be logically theorized that many of these people do not even realize that this document exists, much less support it. Therefore, this thesis sentence is fictional and thus, hypocritical since the core value statement refers to the importance of honesty and integrity later on in its content. Additionally, since the statement is re-evaluated every two years, it should represent the views of the current SWT community.
             In order for the SWT core value statement to contain integrity, those involved with the university must be consulted in some form before their stance is assumed. This process could occur through voting, feedback, or many other means. Also, SWT should be committed to making this values statement more visible to those members of the university community.
