             In JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, a troubled teenager named Holden Claufield struggles with the fact that everyone has to grow up. Holden, in his narration, relates a flashback of a significant period of his life, three days and nights alone in New York City. This event changed Holden perspective of the world since he was faced with a change in the state of his life. In school he was always protected and cared for but now he was alone in the real world. This change in state of life greatly affected Holden's well being. He matures quickly and eventually goes mad because of his obsession of innocence. The frightening process of maturing quickly in the real world without any companions led to the destruction of Holden Claufield in, The Catcher in the Rye.
             In the beginning of the novel, Holden's initial character is one of a child. Throughout the book, he takes steps and the forces of change take a toll on his childish ways. In the end he seems to be changed into a man. At the beginning he is extremely immature. He characterizes almost everyone as "phony" and he feels that all of his neighbors are hypocrites. Holden also maintains a lack of responsibility throughout the entire book. He was the equipment manager of the fencing team at Pencey, but he lost the equipment on the subway. He was not only irresponsible but he was also very indolent when it comes to schooling. Holden, failed out of two schools because of his absences and lack of effort. His glorification of children and the joy he gets from reminiscing of his own childhood all contribute to the destruction he suffers from in the end of the novel.
