response on trifels by Susan Glaspell

             The play 'Trifles written by Susan Glaspell in 1916 can be considered a revolutionary writing in it its advocacy of the feminist movement. This time period in American History of the feminist movement taking root, with it's ideas of a greater equality across genders, was a time that should always be remembered and retold in any form. Since this play was written, the feminist movement has been embraced, and America is much changed, yet it is all the more important to know where we as a society came from so we can appreciate the independence and freedom we have now.
             The plot is based on a fast flowing stream of events, in a short one act format, leading to a clean unraveling of the mystery and meaning of the play itself. The plays short form proves outstanding for entertainment and dramatic purposes and while still being able to convey the higher ideals of the feminist movement in a palpable witty fashion. The play in it's entirety takes place in one evenings time. As the problem is defined and the solution is found and the purpose of the play itself is evident.
             The play illustrates a major change in the ideology of America in that it shows the need for the mind set's of the people's of the times to change from an old fashioned patriarchal chauvinistic one to a more modern mind set of equality across genders. Glaspell goes about this in her showing of how the old way of thinking of men being in charge backfires on their ability so come to the truth. If the men held the women in the same regard as themselves and did not consider womens' lives' to be 'Trifles' then the real truth would have been exposed(as the probelem would have never occurred in the first place.)
             The play is not intended to be a murder mystery, it is clearly meant to express the needs for social change away from male dominated ways of thinking. The play is about the personal independence and freedom of a wome
