oducing crops with biotechnology is a risk that must be taken to in an effort to improve hunger, lack of resources, and other global conditions.
To fully grasp the idea of genetically modified foods, you need to have an understanding of the methods and techniques that are used. Biotechnology in its simplest terms, is the utilization of living organisms or their components to provide useful products or processes. (Persley 3) This encompasses all agriculture, since it is based on the production of plants and animals to provide food. In 1850's, introducing new genes into a crop could only be accomplished by sexual crossing, therefore limited only to close relatives of the plant species. Gregor Mendel was the first to accomplish this. (Emerging Species 4) Mendel decided to breed garden peas and observe the physical traits. He chose this specifically because it presents several traits that are easily observed and manipulated. After breeding the peas he called the trait that disappeared recessive,
and the remaining trait dominant. He planted generations and generations of peas with different characteristics and observed the outcome. Eventually he looked at much more complex cases than just observing single characteristics. Unfortunately, Mendel's work was not recognized until turn of the century.
In contrast to what science did in the past, recently methods have been constructed to selectively alter the genetic instructions in the DNA that direct the growth and development of plants. Some think that genetically modified crops are not going to be as safe as today's food or that some of the long-term effects have not been thoroughly investigated. These are inaccuracies. Thinking about what people put in their bodies' everyday and the risks they take, I would assume that people would understand we do not have the luxury to wait. The consumption of fast, greasy food, sodas, excessive exposures to sunligh...
