2.) The relationship between Lone and Ma evolved rather than changed. This is shown by how their relationship gradually changed over a period of time rather than instantly. Ma had to prove himself to Lone before they could truly become friends. The only way that he could do this was to show his dedication over a period of time; Lone's trust and friendship could not be gained instantly. In the end, Ma gained Lone's friendship, but Lone was very reluctant.
             In the beginning, Lone thought that he was so much better than Ma and everyone else in the camp. This can be shown with how Lone went away from everyone else when he would practice the opera. It was also shown with how he thought everyone else was "dead." "...I live because I can still force my muscles to work for me. Say it. 'They are dead.'" (97) Eventhough Lone is only two years older than Ma, he still treats Ma like he is a child rather than someone that is his equal. He tells Ma that since he doesn't feel that the rest of the people in their camp is dead that he can never have the dedication to succeed in the opera. Eventually Lone gives in and says that he will teach him the opera but only if Ma admits that he is dead like everyone else unless he refuses to give in to the ways of the white man. Ma finally admits it and then Lone says that he will teach him.
             Throughout his teachings, Lone still acted above Ma and treated him as less of a person than him. "Well, I've learned from the past. You're stubborn. You don't go. All right. Tay there. If you want to prove to me that you're dedicated, be a locust till morning. I'll go." (103) Basically, Lone made him feel inferior but I feel that this was because Lone saw the potential that Ma had and wanted him to succeed.
             After Ma finally thought that he had proven himself to Lone, Lone had lost all hope and had given in to the ways of the white man. This upset Ma and so
