Eventually, the antagonist appears in the form of a man, a stranger. The stranger arrives in a horse drawn wagon. Upon the wagon, hung a canvas that stated he was businessman, whose job was fixing metallic items. As part of idle small talk and salesmanship the man tells of his travels up and down the West Coast and asks for directions back to the main road. When the man states that he is no hurry "I go from Seattle to San Diego and back every year...I am to follow nice weather." Elisa can only contemplate how it would be to escape her contained world "That sounds like a nice kind of a way to live." The man then turns his focus to business. Elisa rebuffs his initial sales pitch "...her eyes hardened with resistance." as she stepped into the man's world of business. Elisa succeeded albeit a brief moment. After four attempts to empower Elisa to employ him, the man knew he'd only served to irritate her. He then struck upon her Achilles heel, for her power source was also her weakness.
