e country has worked so hard to earn over the
past hundreds of years. If America could be the first country to develop the atomic bomb,
they would be able to do whatever they wanted because no other country had yet
developed the atomic bomb. They could not retaliate. America would be able to use the
atomic bomb as a threat to keep world peace and establish itself as the supreme power in
the world. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt first started the project to beat Hitler to
getting ahold of atomic power. He feared that if Hitler's scientists discovered methods of
producing the atomic chain reaction, Hitler would feel that he could take over America
and start dropping bombs on American cities and on American troops to deplete the
country's forces. Hitler could be Hitler was successful in destroying American cities,
forcing the United States to give up. This would leave its citizens, especially Roosevelt
because he was handicapped, subject to the Nazi prejudices and persecution and
destroying much of the hope for the world to conquer Germany. The United States had a
strong reputation to defend and it represented the hope for the world. Hitler was once
quoted as saying that nuclear physics was a "Jewish science"(Groves, p 78.). That could
have been a ploy because the Germans' military efforts were aimed at uranium deposits in
Portugal and Belgium. There was also news which stated that the German scientists had
found out how a chain reaction works.
In 1938, Germany announced they could split uranium by bombarding it with
neutrons which accompanied high energy. This is the first step in producing a bomb
which uses the same principles and reactions. Leo Szilard and Edward Teller drove to
Albert Einstein's house on Long Island to tell him about it. They urged him to write a
letter tot the president to tell him that "it may be...
