The Dynamics of Welfare Stigma

             The dynamics of welfare stigma very much affects people in society today. Perhaps for some, being a recipient of welfare may not seem like any big deal, however for others not only are they stigmatized by it, they are stereotyped. Unfortunately for so many, welfare is a resource that we use in order to attempt to keep a roof over our heads and to feed our families.
             It is easy for to identify with how this stigma affects people. For This writer was at one time a recipient. Coming from an affluent family and
             marrying into a middle class family life took on an entire new meaning. No longer living an accustomed lifestyle things became difficult. Bills were not
             being paid and alcohol abuse was a key issue that essentially broke up the family. With two small children to house and feed, and not being able to go
             back to the family, welfare was the only recourse.
             It was indeed a very painful time. Never before having been stereotyped, life as it once was had changed. It was horrible just having to go the welfare office to apply and when it came to buying groceries, and
             pulling of the food stamp books, the feeling of overwhelming embarrassment was beyond measure. There was no way that this writer could have gone back to her father and asked for help. There was a saying
             back then, that still applies to many today. "You made your bed, now lie in it." Living from day to day was so difficult. Had there not been two tiny children involved, pride would most definitely would have been a factor that would have prevented this writer from ever going inside that welfare office.
