The first is murder committed in the commission of a felony. The second is multiple murders. The third is the murder of a police officer or correctional officer in the line of duty. The fourth is an especially cruel or heinous murder. The fifth is to murder for finical gain. The sixth is a murder by an offender having a prior conviction for a violent crime. And the seventh one is to cause or direct another to commit murder (Costanzo 20). Approximately eighty percent of capital cases involve the defendants charged with the first circumstance, murder during the commission of a felony (Guilmette 2). Another aspect of capital punishment is time. The amount of time it took for someone to be convicted and put to death in the past was at most three to four days.
