             Janie- Janie is the main character in the novel. She tells the story of her life and the reader grows up with her threw her life. The majority of her story takes place when she is in her late thirties and forties. She looks younger than she is which make woman jealous of her. She is a very likeable person and despite this she does not have many friends.
             Pheoby Watson- Pheoby is the person that Janie is telling her life story to. She is not in the novel very much. However, she is the only friend of Janie at the end of the novel.
             Logan Killicks- Logan is Janie's first husband. He marries Janie when she was sixteen. Logan is not in the novel but he gets the action started. He doesn't treat Janie very well and she eventually runs away from him.
             Joe Starks- Joe is the first person Janie fell in love with and he ends up being her second husband. She ran away with him and went to Eatonville and he becomes mayor. Joe was a good man but treated and cared more about the town than he cared about Janie. After Joe died she felt that she had freedom and moved on with her life.
             Tea Cake- Tea Cake is the love of Janie's life. They loved each other a lot and were extremely happy together. He was happy with life and had a free spirit. He didn't let anybody tell him what to do and some of that attitude rubbed off o
