Euthanasia is a peaceful way to end a suffering person's life. As defined in Mosby's Medical Dictionary (pg. 447), euthanasia deliberately brings about the death of a person suffering from an
incurable disease. Medical professions are torn over the use of euthanasia.
Through my research, it will be discovered the vast advantages the
legalization of euthanasia would bring about. Also, it will be shown that
there may be some disadvantages to this procedure but all in all, it is
beneficial to all of society.
In Ancient Greece, the killing of elderly or very sick patients was
considered socially acceptable and legal. The ancient Greeks understood that
some people needed to be put out of their misery. In more recent times, it was
used in Germany after W.W.I. Euthanasia was practiced on the veterans of
W.W.I if they were disabled or severely wounded otherwise. In Germany,
after it was used for those purposes, euthanasia began to be used for the
killing of mentally retarded and handicapped persons since it was believed
they were better off dead. That began the misuse of euthanasia and gave it a
bad name. Euthanasia is now so controversial because of those misuses and
poor judgment. It has fairly recently been introduced in the United States for
the original and proper use again.
Euthanasia should not be considered illegal because United States
citizens have "inalienable rights" as stated in the constitution. It also clearly
states that citizens have the right to "pursue happiness" and it is not a happy
life lead by a near death patient in an excruciating amount of pain. A human
being can only handle so much suffering. It gets to a point where a person
cannot endure such a great amount of agony that it should be within their
legal rights to have their lives ended. If a situation got so bad that an
individual felt it was necessary to end his or her life should it not be pain free
and after saying good bye to family membe...
