             Not much is know about a child abuser except, a child is usually abused by someone older than himself or herself and the abuser is often a person in a position of authority. They may be an adult stranger, parent or step parent, an aunt or uncle, a grandfather, a baby-sitter, or an adult friend. Abusers can be found in every type of social, economic, and professional circumstance. Most sexual abusers are not mentally ill, and most do not physically harm their victims. Most abusers are not gay; many are married with children. There are no special characteristics that apply to all abusers, except that they are sexually attracted to children and have a tendency to act on their attractions. "Eight out of ten child victims are sexually abused by someone they know and trust than by a stranger" (Daugherty 12).
             Child abuse victims range in age from infancy to adolescence. Some reports indicate that one third to one half of the victims are under age of seven, and adolescents are victims in 71 percent of all proven report of sexual abuse (Daugherty
             89). "Society is no longer blaming the victim for sexual abuse, but is attempting to understand the complex factors that cause it and the importance of educating people of all ages about it. Being abused can destroy a person's self-esteem, and can lead the victim to believe that no one will ever love them ever again, but that is never true (Daugherty 89). It seems that almost all victims of abuse blame themselves in one way or another. Victims of abuse have problems trusting people again, especially in cases of incest where the victims were abused by someone they trusted (Daugherty 93). Many victims of child abuse feel dirty or shameful as a result. They feel different from other people. Victims need to remember other people have had similar experiences and they're not alone.
