ue because all of us are born with a mind void of any knowledge, then through our individual experiences, we gain wisdom. In his theory of Correspondence (or Realism), Locke discusses his thoughts on how we take in (through observation and experience) the outside world using our senses and form ideas to gain knowledge. The Correspondence theory is!
an explanation of knowledge as not being a gift from God, but as individual ideas that are consciously taken in by each person. If a class of art students study a bowl of fruit, the teacher would look at fifty different paintings or interpretations of the objects. Each student would perceived the image differently. Likewise, each student in a Philosophy class gains a different amount of knowledge through the lectures and readings. In result, their teacher reads forty different papers with distinct interpretations of the same material. Locke's theory of Correspondence is apparent in everyday life. Regis only gives out one million a night, there is only one winner at the end of Jeopardy, and my parents still have to pay my tuition each month.
If all of our knowledge was solely based on what we see, hear, feel, smell, and taste we would never have a correct understanding of many basic things. If you are in a crowd and you think you hear a friend's laugh or think you see them from behind but are mistaken, you can justify your misjudgment. You know that your knowledge of that person's existence is not based entirely on your recognition of them, you were simply deceived by your senses. Locke's theory of Coherence does not consider this and would accept the false evidence and then you would have to truly believe that the stranger was your friend. Descarte objects to the Coherence theory and does not believe that knowledge is based on what is sensed because this is not always a valid interpretation. Descarte does not trust anything that has once betrayed him. Des...
