Everybody has some kind of moral or meaning behind it. We can call that its theme. I have read, "The Pearl", by John Steinbeck. In the following few paragraphs I will describe what the book is all about.
The Pearl is about a poor Mexican (Kino), his wife (Juana) and his only child (Coyotitio). In the story due to certain circumstances Kino finds a great pearl. This pearl is considered to be the Pearl of the World. He thinks himself very fortunate and makes plans of what he is going to do with it. The whole town is focused on the pearl. They follow the family everywhere. At this point we can start to discuss what the book is about. We begin to see how jealous people really are. Not everybody is happy for Kino. Many people are very greedy and they want the pearl for themselves. Somebody even tries to steal it from Kino. This can be stated as; people are greedy and jealous by nature. Another important idea that we can derive is how stubborn people are. Kino was warned that the pearl will not bring good. In the story it says, "It is not good to want a thing too much", that's exactly what Kino did, he wanted that pearl too much. He wanted it because it was his only way out of his!
present life. He wanted Coyotitio to get an education and to change his life around.
These ideas are supported even more as the story progresses. As the story progresses Kino is being tricked by the pearl buyers, fortunately Kino doesn't fall for the trick. Juana tries to throw away the pearl because she claims it is evil, Kino hits her and says he will fight whatever he has to fight. Then he is attacked once more for the pearl and he has to kill a man. Somebody burns down his house. Somebody breaks his boat. His family has to flee the town on foot. After all of misfortune he still doesn't give up and does not admit that the pearl is evil. All of this represents how stubborn humans are.
By the end of the story Kino ...
