Born on the Fourth of Juily

             Born on the Fourth of July greatly relates to my life. The story has many
             analogies to my process of thinking. I never served in Vietnam, yet I feel like I
             experience the same things in my life. Ron Kovic does a great job in his story. We can
             visualize the images he is talking about because he uses very descriptive adjectives.
             The images he projects may have a different setting and characters, yet I can still
             Appreciation is something everybody needs to learn and set an example with. In
             Born on the Fourth of July the narrator has problems understanding how the nurses
             could think another persons life was a joke. In the story, the doctors and nurses see so
             many patients each day and it is very emotional to them. They have to continue doing
             their job, as they have many people to help and to help them get through this they
             laugh and make jokes. This helps them not to focus on what is really going on. It
             doesn’t really show that they have appreciation for one life. Personally, I have a hard
             time controlling my spending. My parents constantly complain about it to me. When I
             spend things, I kind of blow it off like oh it’s just one dollar and try not to stress myself
             about it. Also, sometimes I’ll pretend I just didn’t hear. My parents worked very hard
             for each dollar that I have to spend and I need to be more appreciative of it. Weather
             it’s one dollar or one person’s life, we need to be very appreciative of it.
             In this story, the tall black man reminds me of my parents. “A tall black man
             with long skinny arms and enormous hands picks me up and throws me over his
             shoulder as bullets begin cracking over our heads like strings of firecrackers.” (1059)
             The black man had just saved his life by pulling him out. Just like my parents are
