School Vouchers

             The use of taxpayers' money has been an issue ever since the seed of democracy was planted. From state to state, from community to community, to district-to-district, even at the national level, the use of tax money is constantly disputed. Just as the curriculum and quality varies from school to school, so does the opinion of school vouchers. Whether or not taxpayers money should or even could be used o decide the best school environment for under privileged children was a heavily heated debate in the last presidential election.
             During the 2000 election with George W. Bush, issues and standings of his policy on school vouchers was a key tool in his campaigning, which pushed 7.7 billion into his schoolhouse blue prints. Bush came into his school voucher policy saying " In the United States the school system at the elementary and secondary level has the tendency to slack, and are part due to the environment they are surrounded by Schools that are surrounded by ghettos, industrial parks, or crowded cities" (G. W. Bush, St. Louis debate). Today schools are in fact falling in quality due to surroundings. Bush's statement does not merit taxpayers' money being funded towards vouchers, or scholarships, for those who feel their children are under educated as a consequence. Most persons opposed to Bush's voucher system seem to agree that the money should go towards improving the schools and the inadequate curriculum.
             G. W. Bush's plans also entail empowering parents with information and options for their children. Requiring school-by-school report cards and give parents real options like torturing, or the ability to transfer to another school when the children are trapped in failing schools.
