living in the environment

My project will consist of some different topics. I have chosen to focus on how air-pollution affects trees not only on campus but also in the whole region that we live in. I took information that I gathered and tried to put in on paper so that it could be read. I took an air quality sample to determine the type of air we have here on campus. Much of the state has similar air therefore this problem with pollution is not only on campus but also basically in the entire region of the northwest. President Clinton this year announced new initiatives to provide Americans with cleaner air. The proposed new standards are designed to reduce pollution released through automobiles emissions. This is good news for Northeast forests, as mounting evidence shows that excessive amounts of nitrogen-a component of air pollution whose chief source is auto emissions-are slowing the growth of trees and contributing to the infiltration of heavy metals into streams. This couldn't be more pr!
evalent than hear on campus. Just by taking a walk through campus you can see that the trees are not in very good shape. The trees leaves are discolored and the bark is patchy in some areas. Airborne ozone, formed when volatile organic compounds and oxides of nitrogen interact in the presence of sunlight, is also detrimental.
My goals for this project are very obvious goals. I wanted to find out exactly what types of chemicals or pollutant were the major problems for these trees. I wanted to identify weather or not this was localized on campus or if it was a problem for the entire region that we live in. I used the research that I collected to figure these goals out and determine a simple solution for these problems. Also during this project I came to a realization that Acid rain is a very large problem as well as pollution. These trees have a lot of chemicals flowing directly into their roots everyday through rivers and underground water sou...
