The question also will force everyone into listening right at the beginning and to get the audience thinking about what you want to talk about rather then anything that is already occupying his or her mind.
             A third technique that can be used to get attention is to let the audience know that what you are presenting them can greatly help their cause. The audience has to know that the information you are providing is going to either help them perform better at their job, or benefit them in some other way. If the audience knows this they will make themselves listen. They will also feel as if they aren't listening, everyone else may be taking advantage of your information and that everyone else will surpass them.
             The last technique I will mention is that of revealing a few startling facts. This will gain attention quickly because most likely the audience will not know of the fact previously and it will spark their curiosity. This should help to persuade the audience to listen to what is going on in order to see if they believe the fact that you presented to them. Also the revealing of a fact can be incorporated with the last technique the fact reveals something that can benefit them. For example, "by excelling in this field most people tend to make a six figure salary". This will be a fact that will convince an audience to listen.
