I have decided to write my Biology report on the disease Influenza. You might know this disease by its other name: The Flu. The Flu is an extremely contagious viral infection. It normally happens the most is winter and early spring. The infection spreads through the upper respiratory tract and sometimes into the lungs. The flu normally goes through people who share an indoor space like schools or offices.
Both colds and influenza come from viruses in the upper respiratory tract, however; the symptoms of the flu are more obvious and if there are complications, they are more severe. The flu occurs most commonly in school-aged children, the elderly, or people who already have illnesses.
There are vaccines to help prevent the flu by injecting anti-bodies into your system that will protect you from certain strains of influenza. Unfortunately, once influenza has started, there is no other cure but to let it run it's course.
There are many symptoms of the flu. One of the symptoms is a sore throat. Another symptom is a dry hacking cough. Aching muscles, general fatigue, and weakness also accompany the flu. Other symptoms are nasal congestion, sneezing, and headache.
The flu virus is transferred from person to person by inhaling droplets of air that contain the virus, or by handling items touched by an infected person.
Influenza will run its course regardless of how you treat it. Because the flu is a viral disease, it will not respond to antibiotics. If you are pretty healthy, the flu should pass through your body in approximately a week with complications. It is recommended that you get lots of rest in bed and home care for your symptoms.
The best way to prevent getting the flu virus is to get a flu shot every fall to protect you from strains that had developed since the previous outbreak. Also, if you smoke or drink, you should quit because it lowers your resistance to just about every infection. You ...
