ical powers, but is disappointed. Faustus's desperation causes him to turn to the devil. Faustus is unsatisfied with logic, medicine and law. The purpose of logic is only to argue well. Medicine offers good health, while God can offer eternal life. Lastly, law can only offer material things or their value. Faustus, as a renaissance man, has already mastered knowledge in logic, medicine and law but it is evident that he is looking for something greater and of a higher power when he says, "Afford this art no greater miracle?"(Marlowe 24) The "greater miracle" that Faustus is searching for may be inferred to as the miracle of God when he says, "When all is done, divinity is best" (Marlowe 25). Looking for satisfaction from God, Faustus opens the bible and is quickly discouraged as the passages he reads tell of man's damnation. Faustus reads from the Romans "the wages of sin is deat!
             h" and from John "if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us"(Marlowe 25). Faustus only reads part of the passages. From the portion the Faustus reads he forms a syllogism (an argument formed by a major and minor premise to form a conclusion (Neufeldt 1356)), " Why, then belike, we must sin, and so consequently die" (Marlowe in McAlindon 37). This sparks a sense of damnation and hopelessness within Faustus. The portion that Faustus left out could have changed his feelings. The rest of the passage read, "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" and "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all righteousness" (Marlowe 25). If Faustus had read the rest of the passages he would have realized that if he confesses his sins he would be forgiven and given eternal life. Faustus then becomes deeply concerned with his future.
