Walton, is somewhat of a mystery. He is the narrator and the tying link of Victor's story onto paper, giving the book that extra sense of realism. Though no history is given about him, we learn through his letters to his sister that he is an explorer, and hopes to be the first to reach the North Pole. We know a little about his character; he is full of passion, but also remains lonely in his heart, hoping to find a companion. This need of a companionship allowed him to befriend Frankenstein, and in turn, Victor confides his story to him.
The book begins with letters by Walton to his sister, Margaret, who is probably living in Eastern Europe somewhere. Walton had begun his journey towards the North Pole without trouble thus far. One day, a sled was spotted in the distance, with a rather large man riding the sled. Later the same day, the ship found Victor floating on a chunk of ice, with neither a sled nor provisions.
