Universality and Equalization Payments

             Universality is explained in different ways. One way is to just simply say it is the process of being universal. In Canada universality is when all Canadians receive government services despite where they live or what their income level is. This is an important issue because it affects all of us citizens in the present and the future. In discussing universality the question should you be for self-reliance, competition, or freedom of choice, or the opposite comes to mind. These values make this issue very complex because everything is limited, money is limited and getting harder to get, most of our major industries rely on non-renewable resources. I am in favor of further continuing universality to help most Canadians meet our needs like medicare, education, and personal transfers.
             Many students rely on student loans for their college or university tuition. School tuition is increasing every year, by 2004 the University Of Alberta tuition is expected to go up to $9,000 from $4,000 a year for law school students and in the University of Toronto is proposing an increase to approximately $22, 000 a year. The reason for the increase is to make up for insufficient public funding and compete with rich law schools in America according to the Edmonton Journal. Without the help of transfer payments talented students who cant afford these tuitions will miss out on this opportunity to finish what they have started back in elementary and through out high school. Therefore we should continue these programs that the government provides in order to help future generations.
             University reduces disparity and inequality between provinces and territories. If we don't further continue with universality it will start regional tensions that may cause eastern provinces like Quebec and Atlantic Canada to separate from the country.
