"What has happened to me?" A question asked in the story "Miss Brill". The reader can't help but feel a bit taken in by the charm of Miss Brill. She has a way of talking that almost leads the reader to believe she is dressing for a night out with friends. But, to the readers surprise, she isn't! Miss Brill is a story of an old woman who has gone so far out of the loop of society that she no longer realizes she is not in it. Many elderly people have a set of rituals to be performed regularly. But Miss Brill's activities are far from ordinary. She has an interesting way of diagnosing the people she mentally interacts with. By mentally interacting she simply does not talk to them she just feels as though she is a part of the conversation she witnesses. Miss Brill's ability to stray so far from reality allows the reader to feel many interesting points such as maybe she isn't crazy at all, what caused her to become this way, or is the reader meant to concentrate only on!
             "Hermits" is a term that society uses to describe a person who has strayed far from society. But, Miss Brill is far from a hermit. She acts as though none of the activities she accomplishes in the story are at all odd. Many interesting people in history have been know to stray from society for a love of privacy. Miss Brill seems as though her actions show that maybe she isn't crazy maybe she just longs to be involved and lacks the stamina to pursue that need. It may seem easier to her to just falsely interact instead of forming a normal relationship. Or, she could have had past relationships with others and they grew tired of her opinions and left her company. All of these opinions make the reader question her position in the story as a character.
