In order to understand the song "Have a Cigar" by Pink Floyd you must have some sense of how the record industry works. Contrary to popular believe a band in modern day music doesn't earn a lot of money from selling albums, unless of course that artists owns the record company. The primary income that an artist enjoys is the many concerts and promotions they will invoke on during their career.
"Have a Cigar" starts out with the scenario of a record company executive and the band "Pink Floyd" meeting for the first time. The first line of the song is the voice of the record executive Saying "Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar. Your gonna go far". This line showing the contrast between the two people and that the record executive thinks he already knows what the artist wants.
Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar. You're gonna go far, fly high,
You're never gonna die, you're gonna make it if you try;
Well I've always had a deep respect, and I mean that most sincerely.
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think.
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
Everybody else is just green, have you seen the chart?
It could be made into a monster if we all pull together as a team.
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
