OBJECTIVE: To build and fly paper airplanes so that you can practice
calculating speed and distance as well as learn a bit about designing an
BACKGROUND: Before beginning this activity I already had my plane
pattern in my mind. I knew that my design would be basic but effective in
achieving maximum distance. This activity relates to our studies because
it requires us to apply the scientific method and of change in position.
MATERIALS: The materials that were required to make this activity
possible were a follows: sheets of paper of various sizes and weights, a
watch with a second hand, a meter stick, string, tape, paper clips, and a
PROCEDURE: Everyone in the group designs and constructs a paper
airplane. The group then selects an airplane to fly in the class contest. Next
the groups select a flight area, recorder, timer, thrower, and a measurer.
The groups throw several test flights to get a feel for their aircraft, then
they begin the experiment itself. After all the flights have been properly
recorded each group member finds the speed of their aircraft by dividing
DAT@ The speeds recorded for our group were as follows: trial 1, 10
meters per second (mps); trial 2, 18 mps; and trial 3 with 22 mps. I noted
that the other airplanes were slower than our plane and I can conclude
that this is because of their weight and design.
DISCUSSION: I was pleased with the outcome of this experiment and the
performance of our aircraft. We didn't encounter any major problems
except for a straight flight but this was easily overcame by creasing our
aircraft's wings. I enjoyed participating in this experiment because it was
outside of our classroom. Ahhh I love the sweet smell of VICTORY!!!
