Shortly after being signed with the Orioles he was sold to the Boston Red Sox. He made his major league debut on July 11, 1914 with the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park, pitching against the Cleveland Indians. Playing for the Boston Red Sox he was their star left-handed pitcher. Ruth went 18-8 in his first full season in the majors. Ruth was considered by far the best left-handed pitcher during his seasons with the Red Sox. In his first 6 seasons he won 89 games. Ruth pitched in two World Series with the Sox. The 1916 world series, where he pitched 11 scoreless innings against the Dodgers leading the Red Sox to defeat, and he also pitched in the 1918 world series, where he ran his scoreless innings pitched in a world series to 29 2/3 a mark that lasted for forty years (encyclopedia).
While in Boston Ruth was a frequent visitor to Landers' Coffee Shop. It was here that he met Helen Woodford, a seventeen-year-old waitress. They married on October 17, 1914 at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Ellicott City, Maryland
