Nara plain near central Japan which is where Jimmu Tenno settled after he defeated the people of the Kinki region. This Kingdom was said to have been a primitive society consisting primarily of agriculture, weaving, and fishing (Hall, 1989). Much of the information during this time has been gathered from the burial mounds called kofuns. The term kofuns are keyhole-shaped burial mounds that are found all over Japan with the earliest ones found on Kyushu island. These kofuns gave evidence of a hierarchical society, their lifestyle and the physical location of early Japanese civilization. There are 10000 of these Kofun's in Japan but only a small handful of them have been excavated due to the respect for the dead (Chapman, 1991). There were depictions on these Kofun's that showed the Yamato clan gaining power and was also a strong influence on the culture.
