re mile. India's area is 1,269,300 square miles and its capital is New Delhi.
The average Indian lives for 62.5 years. An average of 3.11 children is born per woman. Scientists have observed that there are 33 births a min., 2,000 an hr, 48,000 a day, and 12 million every year. All this is due to the desire of Indian couples wanting to have sons. If this fixation of having male heirs ceases, then the fertility rate would drop. Doing so would also raise the rate of contraceptive use in India.
Madame Bhikaiji Cama and her group of expelled rioters raised a flag symbolizing the Indian people's aspiration to nationhood in Paris in the early 19OOs. Widely accepted as the first flag in the Indian freedom movement, the Paris banner had a red band with a white lotus flower and seven stars to signify the Milky Way. It also had a yellow band with Vande Mataram inscribed in deep blue Devanagri script; a green band with a sun on the left and a crescent-and-star symbol on the right, both in white.
Nine years later, during the Home Rule Movement, Dr. Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak introduced another flag, but due to rising nationalism, it became unacceptable. A call for new leadership brought Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and through him the flag got her first tricolor. The Congress officially adopted the tricolor as the national emblem in 1931. The flag then progressed to having a band of deep saffron to symbolize courage and sacrifice, a band of white imprinted with a blue charkha for truth, and a band of dark green for faith and chivalry. On July 22, 1947 three weeks before Indian Independence, the Constituent Assembly adopted the tricolor as India's National Flag, but replaced the charkha with the Asoka Chakra, or wheel of life, which appears on the abacus of the Lion Pillar at Sarnath.
